Ontario cosmetic surgery council takes on misleading names

Countless bungled cosmetic surgery procedures by general practitioners claiming to be plastic surgeons in Ontario has the body that governs Ontario cosmetic surgeons and doctors up in arms to stop the misleading titles.

The Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons wants the new regulations to be approved by the province so these doctors that are using false titles and pretenses will be banned from using the “surgeon” title unless they were legitimately certified. The entire idea behind the movement is to help protect patients from physicians that are unjustly calling themselves cosmetic surgeons and leading patients to believe that they are qualified to do cosmetic surgery procedures.

If the new regulation is passed by the province it will clarify a doctor allowing the patient to know if they have been formally trained to be a cosmetic surgeon. The proposal could take up to six months to be approved by the province. This is in response to a 32 year old Toronto man dying last year after complications from a liposuction procedure at a Toronto cosmetic surgery clinic by a physician that was not properly trained or qualified to do the procedure.

Some Toronto cosmetic surgeons do not think the proposal will help the issues at all because they say that it will not stop family doctors or surgeons who have no formal cosmetic surgery training from doing the complex and often dangerous operations.

A plastic surgeon in Toronto was quoted as saying, “It’s only half of the job. It’s still not protecting the public.”
